a day in the life
7:56 PMsince this little blog of mine has become a way for future katie to remember how
i usually wake up around 7-7:30 with at least one of lilly's feet digging into my back. the streak of her coming down into our bed every night continues, much to my chagrin.
(we are toying with the idea of switching up the rooms because ryan is a sleep-talker and i believe that is what wakes lilly up. in all honesty i'm just clinging to the saying that nothing will change if nothing changes. so ry may be getting her own room at the ripe old age of 5!)
moving on...the girls are all dressed, fed and we are out the door for preschool by 8:55. you will usually hear me yelling "get your (insert socks, shoes, coat here) on!!" at least 3 times before we are actually in the car. why is it so darn hard for kids to put their darn shoes on?!?!?!
mondays/wednesdays/fridays both big girls go to preschool so it's just may and i those mornings. we usual run errands which include schnucks or aldis or target or all of the above. may is such a trooper and hardly ever fusses about getting in and out of the car multiple times in a 2 hour stretch.
wednesdays we go over and visit with pop. i love our weekly visits and i really think he does too.
(he's a blog-reader....hi pop!)
tuesdays and thursdays lilly is with us in the mornings. tuesdays we go to the little gym where lilly lets out her inner monkey.
thursdays we go to story time at the u.city library. we've been listening to ms. w read stories since ryan was a baby. she is awesome. i did a post on her back here
the girls get picked up from preschool at 11:45.
for the most part we come home and have lunch. on the rare occasion we have some lucky spring-like weather we might hit up our favorite neighborhood park on the way home.
i put may down for her nap around 1:00. she usually sleeps until at least 4. have i mentioned she's amazing?!?
while may sleeps the girls usually play together or watch a few shows and veg. more often than not they are veggin'. i am not a mom who monitors the tv...i probably should be...but i'm not. the tv is my friend in the afternoons.
this is my time to blog, avoid eating everything in the pantry and do stuff around the house. if you know me, you know that me and cleaning do not get along well. i hate to clean. the extent of my afternoon cleaning is picking up toys, washing dishes from the day or throwing in a load or two of laundry.
when may was born i decided it would be nice to have a little help every once and awhile. enter miss maggie. a good friend of my sister-in-law. she started with us last summer while she was home from mizzou. in the fall she decided to transfer to slu and has been coming over every tuesday and thursday afternoon ever since. the girls absolutely love miss maggie. so much so that when i come home ryan almost always asks me if i have any more errands to run because she isn't finished playing with miss maggie yet. thanks ry.
mainly i have maggie to make myself work out. as soon as she arrives i head straight to the gym, or to a yoga class or hit the pavement for a run. i also use this time to schedule any of my appointments...hair, doctor, dentist, etc. i love tuesdays and thursdays. i love having a little quiet time to myself where no one says my name 800 times in a matter of 10 mins. i love driving around in my car and actually listening to my music. i love running into walgreens or the dry cleaning and not getting 3 kids in and out of the car. i love knowing that my girls are home with someone they love and who plays with them the entire time she is there.
usually around 4:00 i start to prepare dinner...if i am cooking that night. i do not want to paint a picture that i cook every single night and we sit and eat as a family. that does happen...but definitely not every night. i am sure some people think "you should make dinner every night...you are home!" this is true but some days i just don't have all the ingredients i need and going to the store with all 3 just to pick up a few things isn't as fun as it sounds.
and you know what, sometimes i am just too tired to cook. sometimes i just want to order pizza.
sue me.
however, after losing my gma i made a new years resolution to cook at least 4 nights a week. gma was always asking if and what i was cooking for dinner. in her house you cooked for your family...no ifs ands or butts about it. so i am striving to be more like my gma...and i have been pretty good about that so far. i always have some very eager helpers when it comes to dinner prep.
after dinner the girls usually play, take a bath (3 nights a week) and then it's off to bed. may is usually asleep by 8 the big girls by 8:30. bedtime for the big girls used to be torture. stall-city. however, dan has taken it over the last few weeks and they just don't pull that crap with daddy.
isn't that funny how that works?!?
so there you have it. our week in a nutshell.
read this post future katie when you are crying because your kids are in school and the house is too quiet.
it ain't so quiet these days...
i need a nap.
(disclaimer...i know i may sound like i am complaining but in all seriousness i absolutely love staying home with my girls. it is hard. it takes a ridiculous amount of patience that i usually do not have...but it is the most rewarding job i have had or will ever have. end of story.)

I am so jealous you get to sleep in so late!! My kids are up NO LATER than 6. Other than that our days so very similar. Oh, and I make Trader Joe's frozen meals at least once a week. They are my saving grace! I love that you documented this because it's a lot more exhausting than people think. Just the cleaning of the kitchen alone after feeding kids 3x a day!! Hope you get a nap one of these days!
