mountainside new year's

1:00 PM

after our whirlwind christmas we packed up our snow gear and headed west to beaver creek. the trip started out great. dan hit the slopes, the girls played in the snow, i enjoyed the free lattes from the beaver creek club.  all was fine and dandy...

we did a little sledding...
helped daddy build a pitiful snowman...

walked into the village and took a load off on a nearby chairlift...

our buddy charlie made the trip to hang out with us all week. it was the making of a fabulous vacation...

until around day 2 when it all went down hill. it was the eve of new year's eve and ryan just wasn't acting like herself. by the time we were heading downstairs for bed it hit her like a mac truck. from that point on poor baby girl couldn't keep anything down. not even a sip of water stayed down for more than 5 minutes. after an entire day of her not moving from the couch i decided to call our pediatrician's exchange. had we been at home i wouldn't have worried all that much, but since we were about 8,000 feet above sea level i was afraid she may get dehydrated much faster. in this case my maternal instinct was right. dan and i spent our 10th new year's eve together at the local urgent care with ry while the nurses pumped her full of fluids. the poor thing...she was such a brave girl though! hardly even cried when they hooked up her iv. what a day. by the time we got home both girls zonked out. their dad & i were right behind them. i think we made it to 9:30...not even new years on the east coast. my, how times have changed!

new years day proved to be a teeny bit better. although ryan still wasn't feeling great she had much better color in her cheeks and was able to keep her medicine down. we were house-bound for another day which was good for ry, but hard for her stir crazy sister! we made the best of it. we watched movies, watched the skiers, made aunt mary paint our toenails...

(that's chris showing off his skills...pretty darn good for only learning how to ski a couple years ago!)

by that evening things were looking up. ryan was back to her old self. singing, dancing, and taking lots of pictures. this is her new favorite thing to do...

big ryan (aka, "dada's friend"...who she told me the next morning she thought was "cute") taught her how to take a self portrait...i have a feeling i will be finding a lot more of these on my camera

things were looking up! that is until this happened....
dan decided to hit the slopes early saturday morning because he wanted to be home in time to have lunch with his girls down in the village. he was only gone about an hour when i heard him calling my name. i come upstairs to find him laying halfway in the door in major pain. he was coming down the run right by the house when he got blindsided by another skier. the hit sent him and all his gear flying and he ended up at the bottom of a little pitch. the lovely skier who hit him stopped long enough for dan to ask "did you just hit me?", rattle something off in a different language, gather up his own gear and take off down the mountain. unbelievable! thankfully dan was able to ski back to the house but had to go straight to the urgent care (our home away from home) to get x-rayed and find out he had torn the ac joint in his shoulder!

what a week! i have never been so happy to see stl in my whole life. next year i think we'll head to florida for our new year's trip :)
